Tiantai Buddhism's international exchange has done focusing on China and Japan.
We were
interested in exchange with Japanese Tiantai Buddhism as Supreme Patriarch Sangwol Wongak instructed
us to grasp the fact of Japanese Tiantai Buddhism after the diplomatic relation between Korea and
Japane was normalized in 1964. It was promoted in earnest as 「the Fact of Korean Tiantai Buddhism」
was introduced to Japan in Issue 19 of Japanese 『Tiantai Studies Newspaper』 after Dr. Sekiguchi Shindai
(關口眞大) visited Guinsa Temple on September 1976.
We agreed that Korean and Japanese executives would carry out exchange in Seoul on July 1978 and the
agreement was concluded naming it 「Korea and Japanese Tiantai Friendship Exchange Meeting」 on July 1979.
In the agreement, the intent said, "Tiantai Buddhists in the both countries promote friendship exchange and
make a contribution to the prosperity of Tiantai Buddhism of the both countries and world peace through close
partnership and links based on Buddha's spirit of peace (和) and the ideology of Tiantai Buddhism that Priest
Zhiyi founded". We have carried out exchange and promoted friendship almost every year and led cultural exchange
between the both countries.
Korean executives of Tiantai Buddhism attended the inauguration ceremony of the quarters of a head monk in Gukcheongsa,
China. And the persons in the Chinese Buddhist circle visited Guinsa Temple and interacted with one another. So exchange
of Tiantai Buddhism among the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan was begun. And then, this exchange was shown
by holding the great religious ceremony to commemorate Priest Zhiyi by the three countries as we marked his 1,400th year
of nirvana.
The opportunity was the agreement to hold the joint great religious ceremony to commemorate Priest Zhiyi by the three
countries of Korea, China, and Japan as we marked his 1,400th year of nirvana when the executives of Japanese Tiantai Buddhism
visited Guinsa Temple on April 1996. The international status of Chontae Order of Korean Buddhism has risen as it has played a
great role in exchange of Tiantai Buddhism among the three countries.
Now, international exchange of Tiantai Buddhism
has actively done focusing on symposiums. Scholars from the West and Asia as well as China and Japan have been invited to the
international symposiums that have been held by the Cheontae Buddhist Culture Research Center once per year. And they have
carried out academic exchange in them. In the international symposiums that began from 1998, 20 Chinese scholars, 14 Japanese
scholars, 3 American scholars, 2 Norwegian scholars, 2 scholars from Myanmar, a Australian, a Frenchman, a German, a mongolian,
and a Sri Lankan as well as Wulimin (吳立民) from China in the 1st symposium and Muranaka Wusho (村中祏生) from Japan have made
presentations in them.
