Bodhisattvas mean the persons who accomplishing Buddha land by intending to and making profession for doing
it and collecting wisdom and good luck and virtue. Bodhisattvas include the ones who enter mountains and practice
asceticism and the ones who cultivate themselves morally or religiously by have domestic and social life and at
the same time, creating misfortune and practicing asceticism.
Bodhisattvas who cultivate themselves morally or religiously play the role of creating good fortune and keeping Buddhism as members of the four classes of the persons who follow Buddha's teachings by composing the Buddhist Priesthood. Among them, there are the persons who practice asceticism extremely and diligently.
A simple procedure is required for being believers of Tiantai Buddhism.
In order to be believers of Tiantai Buddhism, you have to go through Prayers for 3 Days and a Buddhist ceremony.
Prayers for 3 Days means that you devote to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in an oratory of Guinsa Temple, the headquarters,
for complete 3 days except the days that you come and go, in other words, 5 days and 4 nights. The only persons who
registered these prayers can participate in a Buddhist ceremony. Of course, you can visit a regional branch temple
without going through this procedure. Prayers for three days and the Buddhist ceremony can be the essential procedure
for active faith and practice life with a sense of ownership.
If Prayers for 3 Days is to plant seeds in your hearts, the Buddhist ceremony is to confirm being believers externally. When you pray for 3 days, you will devote yourselves under the guidance of the monks who are responsible for you in an oratory after applying for Prayers for 3 Days by presenting your ID cards to an reception area in Guinsa Temple. The Buddhist ceremony for entering faiths is held in Ingwangdang located on the opposite side of the reception area at 8:00 a.m. every three days. When you participate in the Buddhist ceremony, you will watch videos related to Tiantai Buddhism history and listen to Buddhist sermons for entering faiths. Buddhist writings include information on etiquette, living manner, and asceticism methods in temples.
When you prepare and submit a believer card with your personal details report for the meaning of entering Tiantai Buddhism, you will be become a believer of Tiantai Buddhism. The believer who received a believer notebook by submitting an application form for membership to the Executive Office goes back to his/her home after finishing Prayers for 3 Days and gets to continue to lead a faith and practice life in a branch temple close to his/her house. This notebook was designed to be used in every regional branch temple of Tiantai Buddhism.
When you become a believer of Tiantai Buddhism, you get to lead a faith and practice life in a temple or a center built in
a big city in all parts of the country. faith and practice life can largely be divided into three things.
First, you participate in all kinds of events held in the headquarters or regional temples. Major events held in the headquarters include the worship in the headquarters in the beginning of January, the great religious ceremony for the birthday and nirvana of Supreme Patriarch Sangwol Wongak, and the birthday and nirvana days of the Highness Supreme Patriarch of the Order. On the Day of Buddha's Coming, all the temples hold several events. In regional temples, there are regular Buddhist ceremonies and irregular events. So it is good to participate in them by continuing to check the dates.
Second, you participate in Buddhist services or Gongyang (齋) and create good fortune through offering and Buddhist alms(Dana). If you serve the public when statues of the Buddha are installed in Buddhist sanctuaries or buildings will be built to accommodate many believers, you will be perfectly happy and prosperous. Doing 49 Day Funeral Commemoration, Cheondojae(Ritual), and Yesujae to offer Buddhist prayers for yourself, your families, and your ancestors are also the methods to accomplish Buddhist services.
Third, you practice asceticism through devotion to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Devotion to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is the best feature of the asceticism methods of believer life in Tiantai Buddhism. Devotion to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is the asceticism proved by Supreme Patriarch Sangwol Wongak based on several Mahayana sutras as well as [The frontispiece of lotus sutra]. It is the excellent asceticism method that the people living in complicated modern society can practice any time anywhere.
Devotion to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva can be done while you do your usual activities. And the persons who want to concentrate on asceticism can pray any time in a temple of Tiantai Buddhism which is open for 24 hours. The persons who have difficulties in devotion to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva everyday can participate in special prayer days after regular Buddhist ceremonies or Vassa for a month that is held two times per year.
Among the believers of Tiantai Buddhism, the persons who want to learn Buddhist doctrines can receive Buddhism educations in Geumgang
University. Geumgan University is the liberal arts university that the monastic order supports the entire cost of tuition. You can
study the elementary and intermediate courses for each one year in several areas as well as Seoul and Busan. You can learn contents
about propagation by entering the Buddhist monk department after completing the intermediate course.
If you become an executive of a pilgrim association in a regional temple, you can learn ceremonies and doctrines through executive education held two times per year. In case big temples, faith and practice groups including Jijang associations, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva associations, choirs, youth Buddhist associations, students Buddhist associations, and children Buddhist associations have been organized and meetings that you can participate in various activities including tea ceremony clubs and choirs have been established. You can have opportunities to participate in various educations and activities through the Teacher Buddhists Association, the Central Youth Buddhist Association, the Students Buddhist Association, the Children Buddhist Association, or the Guidance Teacher Association.
