Samhoihyang Play

Tiantai studies have made efforts to preserve and succeed to Korean traditional culture.

Samhoihyang Play is an entertainment festival of Yeongsanjae (靈山齋), the Buddhist ceremony that leads the spirits of the dead to paradise.

Tiantai studies has preserved and succeeded to Korean traditional culture in lots of ways. Among them, the representative event is 'Samhoihyang Play', the entertainment festival of Yeongsanjae (靈山齋), the Buddhist ceremony that leads the spirits of the dead to paradise.

Samhoihwyang Play can be Buddhist folklore that Korean folklore is added to Buddhist ceremony. Samhoihyang Play often called 'Monks' entertainment on the ground' originated from three types of merit-transference (三種回向) by 『Dachengyizhang (大乘義章)』. Three types of merit-transference means living beings merit-transference, Bodhi merit-transference, and the reality-limit merit-transference. And they include the spirit of Mahayana Bodhisattva who the roots of virtue cultivated by him are sent to living beings.


Samhoihyang Play is the entertainment held when Yeongsanjae ends as a token of rewarding all the persons who participated in it for their labor. Cheontae Suryukyeongsandaejae & Saengjeon Yesu-jae that wish the departed spirit and the Buddhist ritual or service, peaceful unification, and national prosperity and the welfare of the people finish their ends with Samhoihyang Play and merit-transference of holy memorial service is done.

Samhoihyang Play, the intangible cultural asset designated by Chungcheonbuk-do, was almost on the brink of extinction because there were no any person who succeeded to it. It has continuously been left as a Korean traditional cultural heritage through efforts of monks in the monastic order. This is the valuable asset of the monastic order and at the same time, the precious traditional culture play that makes Korea shine in the world.
